Trendsetter and Rock & Roll Hall of Farmer Sammy Hagar, who turned the Cabo Wabo-beach vibe into an iconic lifestyle brand is transforming the Palms Casino Resort’s pool into a Red Rocker-inspired island getaway debuting Friday, May 17.

This summer,  Sammy Hagar and Palms Casino Resort will introduce Sammy’s Island, a tropical pool getaway inspired by the music and Baja beach vibe of the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, lifestyle trendsetter and spirits trailblazer. Featuring a vibrant blend of delicious food, refreshing cocktails made with Hagar’s signature spirits, and live music performances to make poolside days and nights come alive, Sammy’s Island will officially debut on Friday, May 17.

“Sammy’s Island is something I’ve dreamed about for years and the pool at Palms is the perfect location for it,” said Hagar, who has been instrumental in the design and overall setting of the Cabo-inspired oasis. “In addition to their Pearl Theater being one of my favorite places to play, the Palms has a gorgeous pool deck with multiple pools and a stage for live music, which is undergoing a total transformation into Sammy’s Island. I couldn’t be more grateful to the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the entire team at the Palms for making this dream a reality.”

The sun-filled oasis will feature an abundance of stylish cabanas and daybeds, four ultra-exclusive Red Rocker-themed cabanas, a stunning pool island designed for lounging in the sun, and a poolside restaurant. Each bar will offer a unique spirits experience, including a Tiki Bar serving tropical cocktails featuring Hagar’s premium Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, a partnership with rock icon Rick Springfield, and Sammy’s Beach Bar Cocktails canned cocktails. In addition, guests can enjoy the tequila-forward Tequileria offering flights of additive-free Santo Tequila and Santo Mezquila, a unique tequila/mezcal blend by Santo Spirits, Hagar’s top-shelf tequila brand in partnership with celebrity chef Guy Fieri. 

Sunsoaked guests can indulge in poolside beverage service offering a wide selection of drinks, canned cocktails, beers such as Red Rocker Lager, and an assortment of specialty cocktails featuring Hagar’s top-shelf spirits such as the signature Maui-jito, crafted with Sammy’s Beach Bar Platinum rum, fresh lime juice, pineapple syrup, fresh mint leaves and topped with club soda and dehydrated pineapple; strawberry daiquiris made with Sammy’s Beach Bar Platinum rum and the Palm’s signature frozen strawberry mix; and refreshing frozen Cabo-rita featuring Santo Blanco tequila, Cointreau and fresh lime sour.

Sammy’s Island offers poolside bites delivered throughout the day with a wide selection of dining options including breakfast favorites such as the Baja Breakfast Burrito made with carne asada, scrambled eggs, fries, pepper jack cheese, pico de gallo and avocado in a flour tortilla and Egg Sandwich made with applewood bacon, cheddar cheese, over medium eggs and maple aioli, served on a brioche bun and with a Tajin fruit cup.

The menu will also feature shareable dishes such as Chicken Tinga Nachos featuring shredded chicken tinga, black beans, shredded cheese mix, jalapeño, cotija cheese, pico de gallo and house-made salsa; Chicken Wings, made with a chef’s dry rub and served with veggies and ranch or blue cheese and tossed in choice of buffalo, Vegas hot, or sweet chili sauce; and quesadillas featuring cheese mix, pico de gallo, lime crema, guacamole and salsa verde on a flour tortilla, or add a choice of protein such as carne, pork, chicken or Impossible Beef.

A variety of tacos, burgers and salads, bowls and wraps are also available such as the Veracruz Chopped Salad with lettuce blend, tomatoes, black beans, avocado, roasted corn, cheddar cheese, jicama, tortilla strips and creamy cilantro dressing; a vegan Thai Salad with shredded cabbage, romaine, bell peppers, carrots, red onion, mint, cilantro, peanuts, spicy peanut and coconut dressing with the option to add chicken or seared tuna; or a Poke Bowl with tuna, surimi, seasoned rice, nori, edamame, cucumber, O’s hot sauce, pickled onion and crispy shallots.

Rooted in the immortal spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, Sammy’s Island will host live poolside events throughout the summer featuring a variety of musical acts from headline performances to some of Vegas’ favorite local entertainers. On Saturday through Monday, the pool will feature top DJs spinning sets of music to keep the Sammy’s Island vibes going strong.

Cabo-rita Cocktail with Santo Blanco Tequila at Sammy’s Island

⦁ 1 ounce Cabo Wabo tequila (blanco is my preference, but reposado works great, too)
⦁ 1⁄2 ounce Damiana liqueur (sub more orange liqueur if you can’t find this, but it won’t quite be the same)
⦁ 1⁄2 ounce orange liqueur (e.g. triple sec, Cointreau, etc)
⦁ 1⁄2 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice
⦁ splash blue Curaçao
⦁ ice
⦁ lime peel (garnish)

Method
1. Pour tequila, Damiana, orange liqueur, and lime juice in a shaker and fill with plenty of ice.

2. Shake until ice cold. (If using a stainless cocktail shaker, you should start to see frost on the exterior. Yeah, that cold.)
3. Pour into a chilled, salt rimmed Martini or Margarita glass. Those handblown ones from Mexico are perfect.
4. Drop lime peel into glass.
5. Pour a splash of blue Curaçao onto the drink (I suggest 1/2 – 1 teaspoon) and serve.

A ZESTY RIFF ON THEALL-TIME CLASSIC

The quintessential tequila concoction gets a snap of ginger for just the right balance of sassy and sweet. Meet your new go-to cocktail.

  • 1 1/2 oz Santo Tequila Reposado
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz ginger syrup

For the ginger syrup:

  • 2/3 cup freshly peeled and sliced ginger
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¾ cup water

To make the margarita:
Pour the ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake well and pour all contents into a glass.

To make the ginger syrup:
Combine the ingredients in a small saucepan and cook, stirring occasionally, on medium-low heat until simmering. Allow to cook for an additional 25 minutes on low heat. Strain the ginger out of the syrup and chill in a heat-proof container until cold.

NOTES
The syrup recipe will produce enough to make several margaritas. Only fresh ginger will work for this recipe.
We do not recommend dried, frozen, or preserved ginger.

Here is a rundown of what is on Santa’s list at Grand Geneva this year (and yes, you can catch him swimming and skiing if you’re lucky):

  • Grand Geneva officially kicks off the season with its annual Illumination Ceremony taking place on November 19, 2023, where the resort literally flips the switch to start the season, with over-the-top holiday displays, lights, animated designs, grand Christmas trees, and plenty of photo opportunities to capture the holiday cheer. Now in its 29th year, the Illumination Ceremony will feature activities for kids, holiday cookies, hot apple cider, a dazzling fireworks display, and an appearance from the big guy himself, Santa Claus! Guests are asked to bring an unwrapped, new toy for local children. The event will support Walworth County Deputy Sheriff Department and its Toys for Kids program.
  • There’s a tree in the grand hotel, and one in your room as well. For a modest extra charge, guests can have the resort’s holiday elves add a little magic to their stay at Grand Geneva or its on-site sister property, Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark, by adding a holiday tree to their room. Travelers will enjoy a fully decorated tree in their guestroom upon arrival, complete with ornaments, ribbon topper and an ornament to cherish at home (take-home ornament available at Grand Geneva only). It’s all the Christmas cheer with none of the cleanup! 
  • Trolley Tour of Lights: For some traditional holiday fun, visitors can hop aboard the heated and enclosed Grand Geneva trolley for a tour around the resort’s dazzling light displays and decorations, including the beloved 12 Days of Christmas animated display. For those who miss the trolley, visitors can take their own car down Grand Geneva Way, starting at Hwy 50. 
  • An Igloo Experience. Baby, it’s cold outside but cozy inside one of Grand Geneva’s igloos. Offered at the resort’s Embers Terrace, visitors can reserve a private igloo for festive dining, holiday drinks, and gathering with friends and family. This fun winter experience is available for up to 6 guests for a 90-min reservation. 
  • Brunch with the Big Guy. Grand Geneva’s Brunch with Santa will take place on select dates in November and December. Designed for children, families enjoy brunch served tableside.
  • Santa Mail: Speaking of the big guy, guests and visitors may take advantage of Grand Geneva’s magical mailbox and drop off letters to Santa Claus. Located in the resort’s main lobby, Santa’s helpers collect the mail daily at 3pm to mail it to the North Pole. The best part? Santa takes time out of his busy schedule to send a message back.
  • Gingerbread House Walk: Area residents, in amateur, professional, adult and child categories, display their sugary masterpieces beginning November 19 through the holidays, creating a Gingerbread House Walk on the upper level in the resort’s Ristorante Brissago foyer. Judges from United Way of Walworth County and Grand Geneva will award cash prizes for the top three overall winners in five different age groups. New this year: The resort will feature its very own over-the-top Gingerbread display of its Ski Chalet on a 3×3 ft board. The sugary sweet ski display is made with 50+ lbs. of flour, 3 gallons of molasses, 6 dozen eggs, 12 lbs. of butter, 20 lbs. of brown sugar, and lots of colorful candy.

Where Santa Goes to Splash & Swim: Grand Geneva’s resort campus is also home to sister-property Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark. This all-suite resort features rooms with kitchens and extra space, plus its very own indoor waterpark where it is always a warm 86 degrees. These Southern Destinations Welcome Guests of the Human and Insect Varieties

Now that fall has officially arrived, there’s plenty of chatter about the amazing hues of the season. But leaves aren’t the only colorful, fluttering signs of autumn; there are also plenty of migrating birds and butterflies in the air right now, and it’s that second group that we want to focus on today. Though National Butterfly Day is on March 14, we’re choosing to celebrate these fascinating creatures today, as many of them are making their way south toward Mexico. Here’s a roundup of places where you can see an abundance of butterflies right now … or even all year round. Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge in Gulf Shores, Alabama

               Every fall, butterflies descend upon coastal Alabama as they fly from Canada down the East Coast and to the Gulf of Mexico. Though visitors to this region can see species that include the common buckeye, Gulf fritillary and viceroy, they’re especially drawn here by the prospect of seeing an astounding number of monarch butterflies. By mid-October, hundreds of the orange-and-black butterflies can be spotted along Pine Beach Trail, where they stop for a snack before they continue their flight to Mexico. But they’re not the only colorful critters in the refuge. Countless songbirds have been arriving during the past few weeks and their presence will likely peak in mid-October. As a bonus, the fall wildflowers ensure that while the winged creatures keep the skies and trees ablaze with color, the ground offers an equally dazzling display.

Grand Hotel in Point Clear near Mobile, Alabama

               This luxury hotel in coastal Alabama has been welcoming human guests since 1847 … and butterflies since long before that. The hotel acts as an official waystation for the species, serving as a temporary home to hundreds of monarchs that pause on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay so they can rest and feed, building their strength for the final leg of their journey. Since the monarch has been placed on the endangered species list, the resort’s horticulture team is committed to helping butterflies survive and thrive. They’ve dedicated a portion of one of the hotel’s gardens to plants that are especially appealing to the species, including milkweed, verbena, lemongrass and oregano. The monarchs arrive in Alabama in great flocks during the month of October, and guests who stay at the Grand Hotel during this time report hearing the hum of thousands of tiny flapping wings. Besides watching the butterflies around the property, guests can buy monarch merchandise and butterfly-shaped cookies in the Oak & Azalea gift shop. New this year, during the month of October, registered guests can also head to the hotel’s daily “Grandeur, Grit and Glory” celebration at 3:45 p.m. to get a sip of “Monarch Nectar,” a mixture of fresh lemonade, orange juice and butterfly pea flower pollen.

Lockport Elevated Wetlands Boardwalk in Lousiana’s Cajun Bayou

               Situated in southeastern Louisiana, right along the Gulf of Mexico, Lafourche Parish – aka “Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou” – is a haven for all kinds of migrating species, from birds to butterflies, and the best place to see them is by the elevated boardwalk in Lockport. It opened in 2015 as a way for visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the parish by allowing them to literally enter a swamp for a safe and up-close look at flora and fauna. The 440-foot boardwalk is open daily from dawn to dusk and attracts birdwatchers and photographers from all over the world. Countless species of butterflies can be spotted here, too, from March through May and again from August until early October. As a bonus for visitors who come to see the butterflies on their fall migration, there’s also a chance to see bald eagles in October.

Northlake Nature Center in St. Tammany Parish

               Popularly known as “The Northshore,” St. Tammany Parish is in the southeastern corner of Louisiana and just a short drive from New Orleans. But it feels worlds apart, especially in the parks and preserves and along the trails that remind you that Mother Nature reigns supreme here. Northlake Nature Center is a 400-acre preserve on Bayou Castine, in the town of Mandeville. Visitors come here to hike along trails that take them through forests and wetlands as they search for glimpses of interesting plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects … including several species of butterfly.

The Butterfly Palace in Branson, Missouri

               If you can’t make it to the Gulf Coast this fall, no worries …we know a place where you can see butterflies all year round. Families who visit the Ozark Mountain town of Branson can find plenty of fun and adventure in the Great Outdoors, from ziplining to riding roller coasters. But for those days when it’s rainy or chilly, The Butterfly Palace brings nature inside a large dome that offers a rainforest-style adventure you wouldn’t expect to find in a mountain town. The Butterly Palace is home to more than 1,000 live butterflies imported from locales around the world.

Time your visit right and you can even help release a newly emerged butterfly into the makeshift rainforest. Guests are encouraged to dress in red – the color that most attracts the 40 to 60 species of butterfly – and everyone receives a bright red silk flower with a nectar tube in it as they enter the aviary. Walk through and just wait for the butterflies to land on the flower … or you (they tickle!). Guests are issued wrist bands that are good for three days, allowing them to come and go each day for a truly uplifting adventure.

Lost River Cave in Bowling Green, Kentucky

               This unique cave is toured via boat, but a visit to the site doesn’t just include time underground. There’s plenty of nature to explore aboveground, too … including the Charlie Miller Butterfly Habitat. But you’ll have to put this on your to-do list for 2024, as the habitat only operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This indoor garden is filled with native nectar plants and is home to butterfly species like monarchs, painted ladies and giant swallowtails. As a special treat, visitors can learn how to create their own butterfly gardens at home so they can enjoy butterflies in their backyard.

Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

               We’d be remiss to talk about butterflies and not mention one of the creatures’ biggest fans, Dolly Parton. She’s loved them since she was a little girl growing up in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, and she tells stories of how she used to get in trouble because she wandered off while chasing them. She’s on record as saying that she feels drawn to butterflies because she admires their gentle nature and incredible beauty.

They have the freedom of flight but – unlike many other flying insects – don’t sting or bite, and she sees a lot of herself in those characteristics. In short, Dolly has claimed butterflies as her spirit animal, and fans can find them represented throughout Dollywood and its resorts. A butterfly appears as the “W” in the Dollywood logo, and the insect is incorporated into the décor of Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa, in everything from the weave of the hallway carpet to ornaments on the property’s signature Christmas tree each holiday season. As the park celebrates its Harvest Festival, you can even find a giant butterfly made of carved pumpkins.
