Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery and Buffalo Trace Distillery just announced the 2025 release of the coveted Van Winkle Whiskey Collection. Returning to shelves this September, the annual offering is a centerpiece for collectors and connoisseurs alike, showcasing the family’s renowned wheated bourbon and rye whiskey recipes across six celebrated expressions: Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon 10 Year Old, Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year Old, Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Year Old, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 15 Year Old, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 20 Year Old, and Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23 Year Old. Additionally, in honor of this year’s release, one rare bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle 25 Year Old – recently rediscovered at the Distillery – will be included in Legacy de Forge’s National Bourbon Heritage Month Auction starting September 10, 2025.

The annual release embodies what makes this family of whiskeys a hallmark in the American Whiskey category: exceptional taste, legendary craftsmanship, and a legacy that resonates across generations.

In celebration of the 2025 Van Winkle Collection release and National Bourbon Heritage Month, Legacy de Forge, a new global platform to improve access to Sazerac’s most coveted spirits, will present an exclusive series of rare whiskey auctions this September. Leading the offerings is Old Rip Van Winkle 25 Year Old, the oldest and rarest expression ever released under the iconic name, paired with a private tasting with Julian Van Winkle – and a story as rare as the whiskey inside.

Originally filled into its hand-engraved Glencairn crystal decanter in 2017, Bottle was safely tucked away at Buffalo Trace Distillery, untouched for nearly a decade. As one of the final bottles from the original 710 produced, it emerges as more than a rare collectible: a once-hidden treasure made available for enjoyment by today’s enthusiasts. Beyond its rarity, this archival bottle carries a provenance and a story that elevate it into the realm of legend, offering the opportunity to experience a true piece of bourbon history.

Legacy de Forge’s September Bourbon Heritage Month Auction will feature eight curated lots in total, offering enthusiasts direct access to distinguished bottlings including O.F.C 2006, the newly-released Colonel E.H. Van Winkle Special Reserve Bourbon 12 Year Old – $169.99

This unique batch brings a bolder, woodier edge to a bourbon known for its bright fruit and delicate spice. The Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery carries a proud four-generation legacy. The Van Winkle family’s roots in the bourbon industry trace back to the late 1800s with Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, Sr., who began his career as a traveling salesman for the W.L. His son, Julian, Jr. took over operations until stockholders forced him to sell the distillery in 1972 with the rights to all of their brands being sold to Norton Simon, Inc. Later, United Distillers, who eventually ended up with the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, sold off all of the original labels around 1999. 

After selling the distillery, Julian Jr. resurrected a pre-Prohibition label, the only one to which the Van Winkles kept the rights, called Old Rip Van Winkle. He used whiskey stocks from the old distillery to supply his brand. Julian Jr.’s son, Julian, III took over in 1981 when Julian, Jr. passed away. Julian III has continued with the Van Winkle tradition of producing high-quality wheated bourbon. His son, Preston, joined the company in 2001 and the Van Winkles look to continue that tradition for generations to come.

In 2002, the Van Winkle family partnered with Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, reuniting the Van Winkle and Weller bourbons under one roof. The collaboration was a natural fit, as Buffalo Trace was already producing the wheated mash bill used in Weller bourbon. Today, all Van Winkle whiskey is crafted at Buffalo Trace Distillery, produced with the same uncompromising standards the family has upheld for generations. Bourbon City Recognized As A Top Foodie Destination

Extensive collection of national outlets name Louisville a top place to visit 

As fans of Bourbon City raise a glass to mark the end of 2024, it’s time to recap and celebrate a momentous year in the city’s dynamic tourism industry. Louisville was frequently in the winner’s circle over the past 365 days, earning top travel accolades from national travel media heavyweights such as TripAdvisor, Travel + Leisure, and Airbnb, among others.

Louisville started out 2024 on a high note, being named to Travel + Leisure’s list of ‘50 Best Places to Travel to in 2024.’ Contributing to Louisville’s historic year was the back-to-back hosting of the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby and the 106th PGA Championship, helping Louisville earn a spot on Travel Pulse, Condé Nast Traveler, and The Manual’s lists of ‘Best Places to Travel to in May.’ Both TripAdvisor and Airbnb marked Louisville as a top “trending destination” in the United States, with the online platforms using reviews and booking data to affix Louisville to the prestigious lists.

Throughout 2024, Bourbon City upheld its status with an outpouring of accolades for its vibrant culinary and cocktail scene. Louisville’s restaurant reputation is sizzling, with Travel + Leisure highlighting it as one of the ‘Best Food Cities in the U.S.’ and Cheapism proclaiming it as one of ‘America’s Best Food Cities.’ The hip and artsy NuLu neighborhood earned recognition from AFAR magazine as one of the ‘Best Food Neighborhoods in the USA,’ with numerous NuLu restaurants also receiving individual accolades.

Several of Louisville’s culinary standouts were awarded accolades from the prestigious James Beard Awards. Chef Lawrence Weeks of Enso and North of Bourbon and Dallas McGarity of The Fat Lamb were both named semifinalists.

The LEE Initiative, co-founded by Top Chef contestant and recent ‘Culinary Class Wars’ competitor Edward Lee, received a James Beard Humanitarian award, marking the Louisvillian’s second James Beard Award win. Lee also received a shout for his Butchertown restaurant Nami, which was named to USA Today’s ‘2024 Restaurants of the Year’.

Several of Louisville’s beer and bourbon festivals were also recognized nationally. The sixth annual Bourbon & Beyond music festival had a record attendance of 210,000 attendees over the four-day weekend, including 60,000 on a single day. This marked the festival’s highest single-day attendance ever.

Garden & Gun magazine highlighted festivals Bourbon & Beyond, Garden & Gun Distilled and the Bourbon Boule as three of the ‘Seven Standout Southern Bourbon Festivals,’ while Tailspin Ale Fest captured a spot on USA Today’s 10Best ‘Beer Festivals in the US.’

  • DETAILS: Journeyman is honoring national Scottish poet Robert Burns’ birthday with an authentic Burns Night Supper at The Featherbonr Factory. The team will set the mood accordingly with a candlelit ambiance, bagpipe music, poetry readings, and hearty Scottish dishes. Guests will also have the opportunity to sample unreleased single-malt whiskeys crafted by Journeyman while enjoying a cozy winter celebration of one of Scotland’s most beloved poets. Each guest will leave with a 200-mL bottle of Silver Cross Four Grain Whiskey. Tickets are $80 per person, and attendees must be 21 or older to attend.

  • DETAILS: Just in time for Dry January, Journeyman has released a zero-proof version of their beloved Field Gin — crafted in collaboration with Chicago’s iconic Field Museum of Chicago. An ideal bar cart addition, the non-alcoholic spirit has tasting notes of herbs, sweet berry, citrus, cucumber, juniper and coriander, providing a classic gin-like profile with a crisp and clean finish. Available for $34.99/bottle, the Zero Proof Field Gin can be purchased at both locations in Three Oaks and Valparaiso and will be available on Journeyman’s website. Plus, the Journeyman team is using the new spirit to shake up some tempting non-alcoholic cocktails available at their campus restaurants in Valparaiso, Indiana and Three Oaks, Michigan. Sips include the Dirtless Martini with N/A Field Gin, olive juice and blue cheese olives, the N/A Lavender Gimlet with lavender simple syrup, lime and grapefruit juice, and the N/A Ramos Gin Fizz with lemon juice, soda and foamy egg white.

Hosted in the campus’ East Room, come dressed in your best Western attire and enjoy line dancing lessons and live country music from Steel Country. Tickets are $25/person and include admission to the event, complimentary line dancing instruction, a welcome cocktail, and a drink ticket.

DETAILS: Escape to a tropical paradise at Journeyman’s Polynesian Dinner, the latest installment of their Chef Dinner Series. Chef Amanda Salas is dishing out a flavorful lineup of island-inspired dishes paired with cocktails made with Journeyman’s award-winning spirits. The team will be setting up a variety of buffets including a Polynesian Pig Buffet with hearty offerings like Roasted Pork Loin with roasted pineapple and Pulled Pork served with Polynesian barbecue sauce and Hawaiian Rolls and a cold buffet with sides like Shrimp Poke and Tropical Fruit Salad.
