“It’s going to be my first time performing in Chicago,” Mortimer said. The illusionist, who has been performing in Vegas for 10 years, said he looks forward to touring with his show.
“It’s very exciting for me to discover new cities and meet new people,” he said about touring. Mortimer’s show features a blend of magical entertainment. Mortimer called his production a highly “visual” magic show with grand illusions as well as storytelling elements.
“This. Is a show for everyone, from 5 to any age,” he said.

Mortimer, who starred in Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson: One,” said he co-composed much of the music in his magic show. The illusionist also has a background in acrobatics and dance.
He said he enjoyed working in the Jackson Cirque show, which was the project that initially brought him to Vegas. Mortimer, who has appeared on “America’s Got Talent” and “Penn & Teller: Fool Us,” has a popular social media presence on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram.
“It was an amazing experience to be part of a huge production in Vegas,” he said of the Michael Jackson show.
Mortimer said he was fascinated by magic while growing up in the south of France.
“I love magic. I’m passionate about any performance art,” he said.
“Magic is like music…there are no language barriers,” Mortimer said.
Mortimer said he is inspired by the talents of Charlie Chaplin when creating magic acts and illusions. He describes Chaplin as having had an amazing storytelling ability that allowed him to draw people in.
“I try to bring people into my world the way he did,” Mortimer said.

This “flower power” mob consists of three juvenile sisters
At about 1.5 years old, the meerkats in this flower power mob are still considered juveniles. They were born as part of the same litter at Madison,Wisconsin’sHenry Vilas Zoo, where they were living before coming to Chicago. Their transfer is the result of a recommendation by the Meerkats Species Survival Plan®. This is a collaborative population management effort among institutions within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Meerkats are a matriarchal species, meaning that females are dominant. In a mob, one meerkat is always on sentinel duty, keeping a sharp eye out for predators while others forage. If they do spot a predator, the sentinel will let out a shrill call warning the other meerkats to take cover. Visitors at Lincoln Park Zoo can often spot the meerkat on sentinel duty because they’ll be standing on their hind legs atop one of the tall mounds in their habitat. The mob rotates sentinel duty throughout the day, so visitors might even catch a changing of the guard!

“Meerkats’ social nature and cooperation with one another is a great lesson that all of us can learn from,” said Lincoln Park Zoo Curator Cassy Kutilek. “Clover, Dahlia, and Violet are no exception; one of them is always on alert, keeping an eye on everything going on around their habitat. It’s been really rewarding to see their personalities come out as they’ve acclimated to their new home.”

Measuring between 10-14 inches long and weighing up to 2.2 pounds, meerkats are a small, slender member of the mongoose family whose native range spans southern Africa. As made famous by Timon in The Lion King, a meerkat’s diet primarily consists of insects like grubs and termites. They’re a very vocal species, with at least ten distinctive vocalizations, ranging from growls and clucks to their shrill alarm bark.

Meerkats have a grizzly gray and brown coat with a dark tip on their tail. They also have dark patches around their eyes that reduce glare from the harsh sunlight common to the savannas and grasslands they call home, not dissimilar to the black paint American football players place below their eyes for protection against the sun and stadium lights.

Meerkats are listed as a species of Least Concern with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List, meaning that they do not currently face any threat of endangerment or extinction.

Fans of large scale blockbuster musicals, whether they’re on stage or screen, will want to secure a ticket to a hot show heating up The Windy City’s theater scene.
“Some Like It Hot” is currently gracing the stage at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre. The musical continues to Nov. 3.
The production, which is set in Chicago during Prohibition, is based on the classic comedic 1959 film “Some Like It Hot” which starred Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe.
Directed by Academy Award winner Billy Wilder (“Sunset Boulevard” and “Double Indemnity,” the romantic comedy/musical tells the tale of two musicians who are chased down by members of The Mob after they witness a gangster crime. Dressing up as women to join an all-girl band, the musicians flee the city as a variety of crazy antics, impersonations and other mayhem surround them.
The production is a winner on many levels. From the fast-paced humor to the powerful dance numbers and engaging tunes, this show gets a thumbs up for energy and for pure entertainment from start to finish.
Matt Loehr as Joe/Josephine and Tavis Cordell as Jerry/Daphne offer strong performances as the musicians on the run. Both are fine comedic actors with dynamic song and dance skills. Also offering a standout performance in the show is Leandra Ellis-Gaston as Sugar.
Among highlighted musical numbers in “Some Like It Hot” are “I’m California Bound,” “Take It Up A Step,” “Some Like It Hot,” “Fly, Mariposa, Fly” and “Tip Tap Trouble.”
Attendees of this show won’t be disappointed. Plan to snap up a ticket before it leaves town.

Actor Matt Loehr has been enjoying his work in the touring production of “Some Like It Hot.” The show continues to Nov. 3 at The Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago.
“It’s an absolute dream come true,” Loehr said, about his role as Joe/Josephine in the musical.
In the role, Loehr has the opportunity to show off his acting, singing and dancing skills.
“It’s a job that has everything. And I’m a performer in musical theater who likes to do everything, Loehr said about the triple threats of acting, singing and dancing.
The role, which is a highly physical one, he said, can be “a lot on the body and the brain.”
Loehr said he saw the classic film “Some Like It Hot” for the first time in his twenties and then “rewatched” it prior to auditioning for the live production.
The actor, who said he grew listening to all types of music, has long been interested in the entertainment field and is “grateful” to be working in the industry.
Loehr hopes audience members are truly entertained by the show and can leave their lives behind for a few hours and “have a good time.”

One of the world’s esteemed film festivals is currently celebrating a monumental anniversary, The Chicago International Film Festival, marking 60 years in The Windy City, continues to Oct. 27.
The fest, which is the longest-running competitive film festival in North America, features an array of eclectic films spanning various genres.
“Our 60th Festival represents a transformational year, an opportunity for renewal and growth into the next six decades. Just like our viewers and our filmmakers, the Festival itself keeps evolving, with our eyes and our ears forever open to pressing stories of today and new images of our collective tomorrow,” said festival artistic director Mimi Plauche and managing director Vivian Teng, in a statement.

Attendees of the 2024 rendition of the festival will see everything from comedic and dramatic presentations to hard-hitting documentaries, animated contributions and engaging shorts.
On the agenda this year are 122 feature films, 71 shorts, four World Premieres, 19 North American Premieres and 16 U.S. Premieres. Films starring in the fest include international works from more than 60 countries.
Among highlights this year is the closing event featuring the screening of “Here” at The Music Box Theatre on Sunday, Oct. 27. The original film, directed by Robert Zemeckis, stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright in a story with family themes at its core. The closing night program also includes A Tribute to Robert Zemeckis and the presentation of The Founder’s Legacy Award to the director.
Other films on the fest agenda include “Happy Holidays,” “Slice of Life: The American Dream,” “A Photographic Memory,” “Pavements,” “Flow,” “Ghost Trail,” “The Light of Truth: Richard Hunt’s Monument to Ida B. Wells” and others.

Choose Chicago created this series in partnership with Chicago-based Skalawag Productions to showcase the rich diversity and history of our neighborhoods. “The 77: A City of Neighborhoods” garnered thirteen accolades at the Telly Awards, including five Gold and eight Silver Awards.

Choose Chicago, in partnership with the City of Chicago and the nonprofit Sundance Institute, announced today programming and schedule details of the highly anticipated inaugural Sundance Institute x Chicago event, June 28 – 30. This landmark event will showcase a lineup of films and panel discussions, celebrating both the art of filmmaking and championing creative independence in Chicago’s vibrant cultural sector. Tickets for all screenings, panel discussions, and master classes are now available at SundanceInstitutexChicago.com.

Founded by Robert Redford in 1981 with the mission of fostering new voices in independent storytelling, the nonprofit Sundance Institute is an iconic institution and a champion of independent filmmakers globally. The Institute operates the Sundance Film Festival and it provides year-round support to both emerging and established filmmakers through artist labs, direct grants, and educational events.
Eugene Hernandez, Festival Director and head of public programming, Sundance Institute said, “We are honored to invite the Chicago community, in a city known for its deep appreciation of the arts and culture, to experience a taste of the Sundance Institute for a few days next month. We’re excited and looking forward to engaging with emerging artists and film-lovers from Chicagoland and beyond through screenings, workshops, and speaking programs.”
Tickets for Sundance Institute x Chicago 2024 screenings will be $20; student and senior tickets are $18. A portion of the box office proceeds will be donated to the Chicago Alliance of Film Festivals (CAFF). The donation to CAFF will be used to support their members’ festivals and their important contribution to championing creative independence in Chicago.
“On behalf of the 44 members of the Chicago Alliance of Film Festival, we are extremely grateful for this meaningful support from the Sundance Institute and Choose Chicago,” said Karen Cardarelli, Executive Director of Facets Multi-Media and a CAFF representative. “These funds will be redistributed to member organizations through a regranting process. The much-needed support will help our members further CAFF’s collective goal to enhance the cultural and economic vitality of our communities.”
The three-day event will include Midwest premiere screenings of four films drawn from the Sundance Film Festival’s lineup in January, along with a robust series of panel discussions, master classes, and community programming.

Details: Ilyse McKimmie from Sundance Institute’s Feature Film Program will cover the Institute’s year-round support of artists across various formats, complemented by experiences shared by Chicago-based filmmaker McKenzie Chinn. Joining Ilyse will be writer, director, actor, and Chicago local McKenzie Chinn. McKenzie will share her experience as an alumna of the 2021 Screenwriters and Directors Labs with her in-development feature A Real One. Her proof-of-concept short of the same title won the Gold Hugo for Live Action Short Film at the 2023 Chicago International Film Festival.

Chicago Electric Boat Company, the city’s premier river boat rental operator, has officially announced the launch of private Hot Tub Boats as the newest way to enjoy the river this winter season. Launching from their Marina City location at 300 N. State Street, the heated six-person boats will center cruises on the main branch of the Chicago River for iconic skyline views, taking riders as far east as Michigan Avenue and as far west as Wells Street. ART on THE MART (April 12 – June 5, 2024) – ART on THE MART’s spring season will kick off to coincide with EXPO Chicago’s 11th edition with a commission by internationally acclaimed artist Nora Turato. On view alongside Turato’s work for the 2024 spring season will be the annual Chicago Public Schools (CPS) projection (May 1 – 12) made in conjunction with the All-City Visual Arts program and featuring artwork by CPS seniors. The 2024 lineup will also include new commissions by leading artists Yinka Ilori, Cory Arcangel, and Brendan Fernandes, as well as a new collaboration with the Poetry Foundation. Visitors arriving and departing from O’Hare International Airport’s Terminal 5 (T5) will begin to see an extraordinary new public art collection as several works by more than 20 Chicago artists finish the installation. The $3.5 million public art commission, led by Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), is the City’s largest single acquisition of works by Chicago artists in the last 30 years. The exhibition Del Otro Lado / The Other Side featuring 17 original works curated by Behar X Schachman is now on view throughout the International Arrivals Corridor. The new projects at T5 join recently completed projects at the O’Hare Multi-Modal Facility (MMF):
Installed in April 2023, REACH is a large-scale sculpture by New York-based artists Hank Willis Thomas and Coby Kennedy consisting of two arms, approximately 27 and 31 feet long, suspended between nine and 34 feet off the ground in the North Escalator Hall of the MMF.
The final commission Immigrant Owned by Jonathan Michael Castillo will finish installation in 2024 in the Baggage Claim of Terminal 5.
Born in the late 1920s as a movie theater, the newly-preserved iconic Ramova Theatre has made a triumphant return. Reimagined as a 1500-capacity music venue, it is one of the largest of its kind on Chicago’s south side and notable for celebrity co-owners Chance the Rapper, Jennifer Hudson, and Quincy Jones. Shedd Aquarium recently welcomed a sea otter pup rescued in late October by the Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC). The new addition, temporarily referred to as Pup EL2306, is a rescued male northern sea otter. He will remain behind the scenes in the Regenstein Sea Otter Nursery for a few months as he reaches development milestones and builds bonds with the care staff and the other otters at Shedd before being officially introduced to the otter habitat and the other rescued otters at Shedd. “Choose Chicago has produced something very special with ‘The 77: A City of Neighborhoods’,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “This is more than just a travel series; it is a journey into the soul of Chicago. By showcasing our diverse neighborhoods, we are not only celebrating our cultural heritage but also inviting visitors and residents alike to discover the people and communities that make this the greatest freaking city in the world!”

There are exciting cultural and culinary experiences to be had year-round throughout Chicago.”
The series will feature five unique Chicago neighborhoods: Pullman/Roseland, Humboldt Park, Bronzeville, Uptown, and Little Village, with versions of the latter available for streaming in both English and Spanish. Through conversations with residents and local business owners, “The 77: A City of Neighborhoods” uncovers untold stories that that make each neighborhood a one-of-a-kind and indispensable part of Chicago. The half hour episodes will be used to continue attracting locals and visitors to explore Chicago’s unique and vibrant neighborhoods.
“As a long-time community member of the Asia on Argyle corridor in Uptown’s Chicago neighborhood, I am honored and humbled in sharing my story, my community’s story in Choose Chicago’s travel series ‘The 77: A City of Neighborhoods’,” said Hac Tran, co-founder of Celebrate Argyle and Culture and Communications Manager at the Uptown Chamber of Commerce. “Chicago is a mosaic of many cultures, histories, and stories, and Choose Chicago’s effort in shining a light on these narratives truly reveals that Chicago is in fact a city of neighborhoods.”
“Our goal with this project is not just to attract visitors but to challenge misperceptions about Chicago’s neighborhoods,” said Rob Fojtik, Vice President of Neighborhood Strategy at Choose Chicago, who acts as the series’ host. “Each of these five episodes are crafted to share the untold stories and hidden gems that make these communities unique, further enriching the visitor experience. We worked with community-based partners to identify and elevate the voices and stories that define the neighborhoods featured. The series is a great asset for anyone looking for authentic, only-in-Chicago experiences.”
Skalawag Productions, an award-winning Chicago-based film studio, was chosen through an RFP process and became an integral partner in weaving together the neighborhood stories that are presented through beautiful food videography, captivating interviews, and industry-leading graphics.

Following the launch event on April 6, Choose Chicago will also be hosting neighborhood screenings in each of the communities featured in “The 77: A City of Neighborhoods.”
