The local interest writers and historians Kenneth Schoon and Joseph S. Pete will do a book signing at Miles Books in downtown Highland. Schoon and Pete will appear from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Miles Books at 2819 Jewett Ave. in downtown Highland.

Schoon is a professor emeritus at Indiana University Northwest, where he taught for more than forty years. He wrote half a dozen books about the history of Northwest Indiana and greater Chicagoland.

Schoon has written the local history books “Calumet Beginnings: Ancient Shorelines and Settlements at the South End of Lake Michigan,” “Dreams of Duneland: A Pictorial History of the Indiana Dunes,” “Pullman: The Man, the Company, the Historical Park,” and “Shifting
Sands: the Restoration of the Calumet Area.”

Pete is a Lisagor Award-winning reporter and columnist who serves as an executive board member of the Chicago Headline Club and the Indiana Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He has lectured widely at historical societies, libraries and museums across Northwest Indiana and discussed his books on many media
outlets, including WBEZ, WGN, Fox 32 Chicago, WTHR in Indianapolis, and WDRB in Louisville. Pete has written “Lost Treasures of Indiana,” “Secret Northwest Indiana: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful and Obscure,” “Lost East Chicago and Indiana Harbor” and Lost Hammond.”

“The two of them have compiled such a tremendous amount of information
on Lake County history that it is a story worth listening to and, of course, reading,” Miles Books owner James Roumbos said. Miles Books stocks an extensive selection of local history books.

James Roumbos said. “In a world of big box stores and internet entities, we still are doing business the old-fashioned way, person to person.”
